Elusive Muse is pleased to share the extraordinary work of mixed media artist Carly Swenson.
My name is Carly Swenson, I feel a little pretentious writing about myself and my art in third person—therefore, I’m sticking with first-person. I was born and raised in Havre, Montana, and attended college at Bemidji State University located appropriately in Bemidji, Minnesota. Despite the name, Bemidji is not, in and of itself, an actual state.
I received a BFA in Visual Arts with 2D emphasis and a minor in Art History. I have found my understanding and interest in art history plays a persistent role in my work. I am currently living in Grand Forks, ND after having spent the previous seven years abroad. I lived on the Portuguese island of Terceira in the Azores for three years. Living abroad has been a fantastic experience. However, Montana will always hold a very special place in my heart. Before Terceira, I spent four years in England. I have learned that British people liking tea is a fairly accurate stereotype. I never liked coffee or tea until we moved there. I love it now. I think it helps make cloudy days feel cozy instead of depressing.
I have been creating art for, honestly, as long as I can remember.
I get sad if I don’t.

Carly- I have loved your work for years. You make authentic art.
Inspiring, amazing work! Interesting you are from Havre, I am from Kalispell. I was just in Bemidji in June with Terry and some friends on a men’s art retreat. Wonderful work Carly!
Kalispell is so pretty. My family used to go ski over at Big Mountain every winer. I love that area. And Terry is the best! I saw photos from your retreat it looked amazing, you are a group of very talented artists.
